So, what makes our book different? We are happy you asked. Having researched other ‘teaching’ books, we noticed that most of them included vital topics such as classroom management, discipline problems, etc.; however, other essential issues, such as giving homework, designing tests, using warm-ups, technology, icebreakers, and ‘Today’s students,’ were omitted. Not only do we include these critical topics, but we go into their rationale and offer detailed step-by-step guidelines to make it easier for the teacher to use in their classroom.
A vital component of this book was to include some of our own ‘roller coaster’ range of personal experiences in each chapter to enhance and validate the concepts and activities offered to readers. You cannot learn how to teach simply by reading a book. However, you can learn how to be a better teacher. Though our book has ‘new teachers’ as its primary audience, we all know that teaching is a lifelong ‘learning’ process, and we firmly believe that veteran instructors will also enjoy our stories and be able to add to their already incredible repertoire of teaching practices.
Though we are both math instructors, our experiences in sharing our unique methods and ideas at state and national educational conferences validate that our pedagogical practices and techniques transcend any subject and apply to teaching students on every grade level and discipline.
We both feel that it is the responsibility of the teacher to inspire their students. Inspiration is the spark that can change the world, even if it is just “One Student at a Time” and “One Teacher at a Time.”
