Academic Camps

What are Academic Camps?

Mathematics

Science

English

In 2009, Hartnell College received a STEM grant. With this grant the math department was given an opportunity to do something special for their students. Ken took this gift and created Hartnell’s first Academic Camp called the Math Academy. Since then, the Math Academy and subsequent Science and English academic camps became the single most successful grant program at Hartnell.

The Hartnell College Math Academy (Academic Camp) and the new Reading and Writing Academy (Camp) are held each summer and winter during the semester break. Depending on funding (Title V or STEM), it is scheduled from either four or eight hours/day for the two weeks immediately before the beginning of the semester.

The primary purpose of our academic camps is to give our students a jump start on the courses that they will be enrolling in the next semester.

Only the very best teachers, tutors, and Leaders are selected to work with the academies. Our tutorial administrator then created the Lifelines Program where these same tutors and SI (Supervised Instruction) Leaders continue to support their Academy students during the semester that follows each Academy.

Our statistics show that almost half of the Math Academy students re-assess into a higher level of math then what they originally intended to enroll in. And those same students are more likely to succeed in these higher-level classes than if they had not attended the Academy and had taken their intended lower-level math course.

Ken is more than happy to speak to your faculty with an engaging, entertaining and informative presentation about how to create an academic camp for your school:

The Math Academy Provides Students with:

Innovative Teaching

In the academy, teachers use every trick in the book to motivate and inspire their students. We have proven that playing games and using ‘interactive’ activities helps to improve the learning process.

Innovative Teaching

Study Skills

It is not all fun and games. We take their learning very seriously. How to study, when to study and with whom to study are an essential part of the academy day.

Study Skills

College Orientation

Most of our students are incoming freshman and some of our them have no idea where the library is or the financial aid office, etc. We use our last day of the academy to play ‘The Amazin’ Hartnell Race’ where students compete in groups and travel throughout the entire campus solving clues and performing fun tasks.

Tutorial Support

Our tutors are a strong component of the academy. Each academy class has, one instructor and 1 – 3 tutors depending on our budget for that year. Each tutor goes through a rigorous training program in order to qualify as an academy tutor.

Collaborative Learning

Collaborative Learning

Another vital component of the academy program is our constant use of collaborative learning. All of our classes have their desks arranged in groups of 4 – 6 students, which allows both the teacher and the students the benefit of having ‘individual’ and ‘small group’ activities.

Students Service Day

This is a planned afternoon where the entire Academy staff and student enrollment meet in a auditorium style room to learn from our guest speakers. These speakers, from every possible student service, give a short presentation on their respective programs, such as, financial aid, the Lifelines Program, counseling, TRIO, admissions, etc.
